Exploring The Power Of A Growth Mindset
Jan 25, 2017I had the privilege of hosting an enlightening workshop on growth mindset at The Circle. It was a fantastic opportunity to share the foundational research of Carol Dweck and explore how these concepts are being implemented across Dundee, particularly in the Strathmartine Ward.
A growth mindset, as opposed to a fixed mindset, embraces the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This perspective is crucial in fostering resilience and a love for learning. The event, attended by local businesses, charities, and community members, delved into how our brains form new neural pathways through persistent effort and learning.
We examined the harmful effects of praising intelligence over effort, emphasising the importance of encouraging persistence and strategic problem-solving. The power of 'yet'—the idea that one hasn’t succeeded yet—was highlighted as a motivational tool.
The discussion also addressed the challenge of adapting growth mindset principles to the local culture. Scottish communities often exhibit self-effacing tendencies, making it vital to present these ideas in an authentic and relatable manner.
The workshop was a step towards embedding these principles into our community practices, aiming to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement and resilience. We left inspired, ready to apply these small but impactful changes in our personal and professional lives, knowing there's always room to grow.
