Finding Purpose And Meaning In Your Career With Jamie McBrearty

Even though you're trying your hardest to be happy on each Monday morning, you can't help but feel depressed as you approach the office.

Do you consider the possibility of working with a true purpose rather than "just moving papers around on your desk?"

How Do You Find Purpose?

The more determined you are to actively seek meaning in your life, the more challenging it may be to locate.

Discovering meaning in your profession might be quite similar to this. Avoid rushing ahead in

a desperate attempt to decipher the message. Instead, conduct a more deliberate, silent search. You might discover the meaning and purpose you're looking for in the most unexpected way.

As a consultant and coach, Jamie Mcbrearty has worked with a lot of people who have hit a wall in their careers. They feel stagnant and unfulfilled, like they're not making a meaningful contribution to the world. Jamie believes that a lack of purpose, or "why," is often the root of this dissatisfaction.

Why Change Your Mindset

So, what is a "why"? It's your reason for doing what you do. It's what motivates you and gives your work meaning. For some people, their why might be to make a positive impact on the world. For others, it might be to provide for their family or to achieve personal fulfilment.

The problem is, many people have never really thought about their why. They might have a vague sense of what they want to do, but they haven't dug deep enough to uncover their true motivations.

Your attitude plays a big part in the meaning of why, this is whether or not you find meaning in your work. It's common to find meaning and happiness when you put other people or things before yourself.

Jamie Mcbrearty encourages people to take the time to reflect on their why. He suggests asking yourself questions like:

  • What are my core values?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • What do I want to achieve in my life?
  • What impact do I want to have on the world?

By answering these questions, you can start to get a clearer picture of your why. Once you have a sense of your purpose, you can use it as a guide to make decisions about your career and your life.

For example, let's say your why is to make a positive impact on the world. You might start looking for career opportunities that align with that purpose. You might also start volunteering or donating to causes that you care about. By living in alignment with your why, you'll feel more fulfilled and energized.

Of course, finding your why is not always easy. It can take time and reflection to uncover your true motivations. But it's worth the effort. When you have a strong sense of purpose, you'll be more focused, more motivated, and more resilient in the face of challenges.

Jamie Mcbrearty believes that everyone has a why. It's just a matter of uncovering it. So if you're feeling stuck or unfulfilled in your career, take some time to reflect on your purpose. You might just discover a new sense of direction and meaning.

Apply The "5 Whys" To Your Job

Try asking yourself "Why?" at least five times to find the real purpose of your career.

Here's an example. A manager at a supermarket like Tesco. He begins by wondering why he is working at all in the first place:

  • Why do I have a job? Answer: To make sure that my co-workers do their jobs correctly and well.
  • Why must my co-workers do their jobs? Answer: So that the company continues to provide excellent services to the customers in our area.
  • Why do customers want to shop at Tesco? Answer: So they can get value for money as well as convenience.
  • Why do customers value for money and convenience? Answer: So they don't have to spend a fortune on high quality nutritious food and can get it any time and anywhere.
  • Why does that matter? Answer: Customers can lead fuller, more enjoyable lives.

As a result of these questions, the manager begins to view his work from a whole different perspective. Although he works as a manager at a local supermarket, his ultimate purpose is to improve the lives of others.

This is how most careers can be categorised. With the help of Jamie Mcbrearty, you will never stop reflecting on your actions and motivations.
